Padma Shri Dr. Prakash Amte is a prominent social worker and medical doctor from Maharashtra, India, known for his extensive work in tribal areas, particularly among the Madia Gond community. He is the son of the renowned social activist Baba Amte and has dedicated his life to continuing his father's legacy through the Lok Biradari Prakalp (LBP), which he has managed since its inception in 1973.
Dr. Amte completed his MBBS degree from Nagpur University and chose to forgo a lucrative urban medical career to serve in the underprivileged Gadchiroli district. The LBP, meaning "A Project of People’s Brotherhood," provides comprehensive services to tribal populations, including free medical care, education, and agricultural assistance. Under his leadership, the project has transformed from a simple hut into a well-equipped campus featuring a multi-specialty hospital, schools, and hostels for hundreds of students. This initiative has significantly improved literacy and healthcare access in an area that previously had almost no such facilities.
In addition to healthcare and education, Dr. Amte established the Animal Ark, an orphanage for injured wildlife that began with a single baby monkey and has grown to house various species such as leopards and snakes. This initiative reflects his commitment not only to human welfare but also to animal conservation.
Dr. Amte's contributions have been recognized nationally; he received the Padma Shri award in 2002 and the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership in 2008. His life and work have inspired many, leading to documentaries and publications about his efforts. Through his tireless dedication, Dr. Prakash Amte has played a crucial role in uplifting tribal communities and fostering a sense of brotherhood and mutual support among diverse populations in India.
